The varsity girls soccer team defeated U-High 8–1 in a high-intensity game on Friday.
The first half of the game was tight. The Romans opened scoring with a goal from freshman Morgan Kohn, followed by a goal from senior Taylor Mitchell. However, U-High answered quickly with a goal of their own, and they kept the score at 2–1 the remainder of the half.

“Our spirits were down at halftime since they scored and had a bunch of momentum,” sophomore Sonya Hu-Lowenthal said. “But then we got a great speech from [seniors] Lauren [Rosenberg] and Beth [Rosenow], our captains, and they just said to win we have to play our own game.”
The team’s energy skyrocketed in the second half and the Romans took complete control of the game. Lauren scored within the first few minutes back on the field, and Sonya quickly followed with another score.
“The crowd was heckling and chirping at us once we got higher up on the scoreboard, so it felt really great to keep scoring,” Sonya said.
While U-High’s frustrations grew, the Romans kept their cool and scored another three goals—one from senior Ruby Larsen, and two more from Lauren. The game concluded with a goal from sophomore Minha Botello.
“The first half a lot of us were in our heads, but we had it in us from the start,” junior Eliza Goldhaber said. “Once we picked each other up, we were able to get the result we wanted. It felt incredible to win.”
