The varsity girls soccer team beat Amundsen High School in a hard-fought match at Field Day Frenzy on Friday, surrounded by cheering Romans of all ages.
The game proved to be extremely close, with neither team scoring in the first half.
“We were defending most of the first half, but in the second half we stepped up and were possessing the ball a lot more than them,” junior Myla Robertson said.
Within the first 10 minutes of the second half, freshman Margaux Moffat scored, and then near the end of the half she scored again, putting the Romans up 2–0.
The team’s offense was not the only improvement in the second half, however. Myla said, “We did a much better job of defending the second half, and they really struggled to get shots off, and even the shots they did get were pretty easy for our goalie to save.”
Despite the Romans’ strong defense, Amundsen was able to net a goal within the last 30 seconds of the game, bringing the final score to 2–1.
“They’re one of the best teams we’ve played all season. They're in a higher seed and play much [better teams] than us,” Myla said. “It felt good to beat a team that was at a higher level than the teams we usually play, with a much more competitive schedule than us.”
