The 2025-26 school year marks The Forum’s 60th year of publication, and we’re commemorating it in style. As any good newspaper would, we want to celebrate with what we do best: journalism. Every month, we’ll be rewinding the clock and giving you the highlights of six decades of our coverage. We ask only that you sit back, relax, and enjoy a look back at Latin through the years.
In June 1966, 60 years ago, the building’s current site was first unveiled to students: “The Board of Trustees has entered into negotiations and acquired the site on the south east corner of North Avenue and Clark Street, the site where the old Plaza Hotel is presently located.”
In June 1969, 57 years ago, students stepped into 59 W. North Blvd. for the first time: “Frankly, after listening to so many students discuss the white-washed walls, the lack of character and the overall change in the school that the new building may bring, I was amazed to find that it has a character of its own and not only seems functional, but a fantastic place in which to work and study.”
In June 1980, 46 years ago, Field Day Frenzy would have looked familiar to Latin students, but under a different name: “Flying frisbees, softballs, volleyballs, eggs and pies; what do they have in common? All could be witnessed on rec day.”
In June 1982, 44 years ago, Latin’s most famous alum came back to visit students: “In addition to the conventional banners, the Lower Schoolers had gone so far as to cut out ‘Welcome Mrs. Reagan’ and place it on the ceiling of the elevator she used to reach the classrooms.”
In June 1987, 39 years ago, the ancestor of SmartEvals first made its appearance: “Student Government, working through Academic Council, obtained permission this spring to distribute teacher/class evaluations to the students.”
