Amid the bustling crowd of the annual Service Fair in the Field Gym, senior Ava Nelson and junior Cece Burt eagerly await new member signups for their Humble Design club.

Established two years ago, the Latin chapter of Humble Design serves the greater Chicago area by furnishing the homes of veterans and families with young children who have recently secured housing after formerly being unhoused. Volunteers work closely with clients to meet their design needs, helping them feel a sense of stability as they transition into new housing, while also supplying the families with basic necessities such as dishes and silverware.
This year, the club has organized two drives for cleaning products and toys, and one event for members to make personalized artwork to decorate houses.
“The biggest [impact] is making art for the kids because it’s something that brings a smile to [them], and when they walk in a bedroom and see their favorite characters, they know it’s tailored to them,” Ava said.
She explained that the club’s goal is to create safe spaces for affected families. Each new signup brings Humble Design closer to doing just that.
“Humble Design makes the house a home,” Ava said.
