This week, meet junior and volleyball player Martin Testai as he talks about Biology class, Argentina, and the friendships that made this year memorable.
Martin Testai (MT)
Anderson Miller (AM)
What’s one class you’re enjoying right now?
Probably Biology. We get to do really fun stuff. Recently, we went on a nature walk around the lagoon and saw ducklings, ducks, and snapping turtles. That was really fun. We’ve also been learning about keystone animals and stuff like that, and we got to watch things about the Serengeti.
What’s your favorite movie?
Probably either “Star Wars” or “Ratatouille.”
What’s something you’ve been into outside of school recently?
There’s this Irish sport called hurling. I’ve been getting into that recently.
If you could travel anywhere right now, where would you go?
Argentina, for sure.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re not busy?
Probably just hanging out with friends or playing volleyball.
If you could have any animal as a pet, what would you pick?
A monkey.
What’s one memory from school you really like?
Probably volleyball senior night this year, and getting to play with all my friends.
Who’s someone at school you look up to?
Probably Tucker Thayer.
Why?
He’s helped me a lot over the years. He’s kind of taken me under his wing in volleyball, especially this year, because next year he’ll be gone and we’re gonna need more leadership on the team. He’s helped prepare to be that presence.
What’s your go-to snack?
Probably just chips and a drink.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
A lot of people don’t know I used to row for two years. Also, I’m Argentinian.
What’s something you’re actually really good at, even if it’s random?
I’m weirdly good at memorizing random stuff.
What’s been the best part of this year so far?
The volleyball season for sure.
How long have you been playing volleyball, and what got you into it?
I started playing with some people at the beach—a lot of whom are my teammates now—which got me into the sport, and I’ve been playing indoors for about four years since.
What position do you play in volleyball, and what do you like about it?
I play right side. My favorite part is that my main job is basically just swinging.
If you could give incoming students one piece of advice, what would it be?
Don’t be afraid to talk to people. Everyone’s nervous at first.
