Freshman Zachary Barner has recently launched a school-wide donation drive, collecting gently used sports equipment for children in need for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.
Inspired by the organization's impact on his neighborhood and other local communities, Zach believes it is crucial for all children to have access to sports. “I started this donation project because the Boys & Girls Club is very close to my house, and I know what they do,” he said. “They help children in minority neighborhoods, and I thought it’d be a good idea to help these kids play the sports they love.”
The drive primarily focuses on collecting soccer balls, basketballs, and volleyballs; Zach has set up a donation bin near the school's trophy case for anyone to drop off equipment. He has also posted signs throughout the halls to raise awareness and is working closely with the Student Service Leadership Board to promote his effort.
Despite close dedication to the service project, Zach admits that donations have been slower than expected. Zach initially planned to close on April 10, but has extended the date to April 24 as additional contributions continue to arrive.
“I’ve been working pretty hard on this, talking to the leadership board and putting up posters,” he said. “Unfortunately, I haven’t gotten a lot of donations yet, but I’m hoping more people will step up now that I’ve extended the deadline.”
For many people, donating sports equipment is not a small ask. However, Zach believes people must look beyond the immediate cause.
“I get it—people want to keep their stuff, and that’s fine,” Zach said. “But if you can donate, even one ball can make a difference to these kids.”
