Former Middle School Director Deb Sampey has been named as Interim Head of School for the 2026-27 school year. The announcement comes two weeks after current Head of School Thomas Hagerman announced his decision to resign at the end of the year.
In her role, Ms. Sampey will bring the expertise of 37 years at Latin, spanning roles as an administrator, teacher, and coach.
The Board of Trustees announced the selection of Ms. Sampey in an email to the Latin community Monday afternoon. “Deb is a beloved figure with a deep understanding of Latin’s operations and culture and a strong commitment to a rigorous academic curriculum that promotes curiosity and emphasizes togetherness,” they wrote.
Ms. Sampey’s history with Latin is part of what makes her so excited to step into this role. “I missed the energy that permeates every space—students and adults—at Latin,” she said. “I missed the range of emotions that you experience every day in a school—heartbreak, joy, tears, laughter, eye rolls, hugs—again, students and adults.”
One of her soon-to-be colleagues spoke to his enthusiasm about collaborating with Ms. Sampey next year. “She’s got great energy in terms of an advocate for the school,” Assistant Head of School Ryan Allen said. “The opportunity to learn a great deal and then partner [with] someone that knows the ins and outs is going to be exciting.”
