Three sophomore history and English classes gained a new understanding of Diwali through a field trip to BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple on Oct. 21.
Led by Upper School history teachers Milena Sjekloca and Ernesto Cruz as well as Upper School English teacher Lenny Goldman, students from Global Art and Culture, History of World Religions, and Middle Eastern and South Asian Literature classes explored the visitors center, toured the temple, and enjoyed a meal of traditional Diwali dishes in the temple’s cafeteria.
Diwali is an important time for the community at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple as they come together to celebrate the holiday’s central theme: the triumph of light over darkness.
“To actually have hands-on experience within the Hindu community is something that will stay with them forever and could inform all sorts of future conversations or perspectives,” said Mr. Goldman.
As part of the cross-cultural experience, students heard from children who shared their families’ celebration of Diwali and learned about sand art, deepening their understanding of the holiday.
BAPS volunteer Pal Pate said, “We hope that visitors take away the importance of harmony and unity within the world and how we can make a major impact.”
