Latin’s varsity girls volleyball team advanced to Sectionals in the State Tournament after defeating Lake View High School in straight sets in the Regional final on Thursday in the Field Gym.
Senior Gabby McDermott opened the first set on an 8–0 service run, forcing the Lake View coach to call an early timeout. The first set was rounded off by a dig save from freshman Katie McLaughlin, followed by a kill from senior Ellie Szczerba that echoed throughout the gym. Latin won the first set 25–9.
The team maintained the momentum going into the second set, fueled by the bench’s chants of “eat eat eat” after every major point. After the ball soared over the net one last time, the gym erupted as Latin won the second set 25–15. The Romans will face Payton in the next round of the State Tournament on Tuesday.
“The game went exactly how we wanted it to,” Head Coach Brian Woodhouse said. “I asked the girls to be aggressive, and they really were. We really played as a unit out there, and I couldn't ask for anything better.”
