The 2025-26 school year marks The Forum’s 60th year of publication, and we’re commemorating it in style. As any good newspaper would, we want to celebrate with what we do best: journalism. Every month, we’ll be rewinding the clock and giving you the highlights of six decades of our coverage. We ask only that you sit back, relax, and enjoy a look back at Latin through the years.
In April 1970, 56 years ago, Latin held a class on kites: "Approximately 30 students came equipped with do-it-yourself kites and balls of string. Mr. Sullivan successfully taught the students how to construct their kites.”
In April 1975, 51 years ago, the school soccer team competed on an international scale: “This is by far, the most ambitious adventure ever to be attempted at Latin. The Latin soccer team is planning to go to Poland to engage in international competition.”
In April 1980, 46 years ago, Latin ran a secondhand clothes store: “Latin School's second-hand store at 2467 N. Lincoln Ave. For eight years Finders Keepers has been selling old clothes, furniture and other items for reasonable prices: The collected money is donated to the Latin School.”
In April 1981, 45 years ago, an all-school boggle tournament had all hands on deck: “The time is running low, pressure is mounting, the letters begin to vibrate and swell before your eyes. … These symptoms don't indicate a rare disease; rather, they're the signs of in-depth concentration in an intense match of Boggle.”
In April 1990, 36 years ago, Jazz Band would’ve found competition with the Wind Ensemble: “Our wind ensemble? Oh my God, they sound so … good!"
In April 1992, 34 years ago, with an entire April Fools’ edition, “The Forum” certainly beat our current satire offerings: “Tacky the Penguin Assumes Position of New Headmaster.”
In April 1997, 29 years ago, chemistry and biology were an integrated course for underclassmen: “The largest change will be for incoming freshman, who will automatically be enrolled in a 2-year sequence: "Chemistry and Biology I" freshman year and "Chemistry and Biology II" the sophomore year.”
