February 4 marks National Women and Girls in Sports Day. When asked, “What does it mean to you to be a woman in sports?” here’s how some of Latin’s women in sports responded:

“It can be difficult sometimes because people usually only watch boys’ sports. But I think it’s cool because it goes against stereotypes.”
“It’s very empowering because I feel strong.”
“Women in sports have a very supportive community, so it’s really fun to be a part of it.”
“With my team being all girls, it’s a really supportive community.”

“[Being an athlete] gives me a way to connect with a lot of people, and it makes me feel really powerful because I love telling people that I play three sports a year. It’s really cool.”
“It’s important to show your skills and what you can do.”

“Pushing myself regardless of any physical and mental obstacles. We’re always thought of as less, so we have more to prove.”
“Our dedication and hard work is unreplicated, because we always have something to prove.”
“Being a woman in sports, you can find a community of people who are really similar to you. There’s a lot of great friendships, and it’s a very close knit community.”

“It means I get to show my strengths and be proud of the things I can accomplish.”
“We have a lot of great athletes who happen to be girls, and it’s great to cheer them on and see their success.”
