Varsity Girls Field Hockey Struggles in Season Opener; JV Picks Up The Slack

Sam Cohen Staff Writer The first of September marked both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Girls Field Hockey teams first game of the school year, facing Oak Park River Forest High School. OPRF is a tough season opener, especially considering Latin is a high school of less than 500 kids, whereas OPRF has over 3,000. Although the Varsity team played a great game, they were defeated 4-0. The loss was avenged by Junior Varsity’s spirited win, 2-1. The JV game started with zest as sophomore Frankie Burik scored within the first two minutes. “We played an aggressive game from start to finish,” said Burik. The game-winning goal was scored later in the first half by sophomore Amanda Gallop. Not only did the offense step up to the plate, the defensive players gave it their all as well, with some great saves by players such as sophomore Meredith Glass, and freshman Maddie McArdle. The freshmen additions to the JV team have really been paying off for both the players and the team. “From the start, everyone has been really welcoming on the team. Starting the year off with field hockey has definitely gotten me more acquainted with the school and allowed me to make new friends,” said McArdle. Another addition to the team, freshman Jordan Weisberg said, “Our team isn’t separated or categorized into grade level or social group, we are all just really close.” With JV’s excitement and energy surrounding the field, and a team of some wonderful coaches, the team is off to a fabulous season. When JV’s Coach Molly was asked her opinion of the season’s big kick off, she said, “It’s great to see the hard work in practice improving the team’s skills on the field. I was specifically proud of the team’s game today. Everyone really came together at the last minute and a half for a perfect finish to a great win.” According to Sophomore Eden Schwartz, “This year’s team is simply ‘boss like hot sauce’.” So look forward to an outstanding season for both Varsity and JV Latin Girls Field Hockey.]]>
