I think that often movies in general have very specific roles that call for a man or a woman, non-interchangeably. Male and female actors often have different traits in their acting, so I’m fine if not in support of there being separate categories. Some films have both male and female leading actors, and both are eligible to win their respective Oscar.
Also, if the Academy really is 77% male, a combined category could lead to a larger percentage of awards going to men, assuming the Academy’s male-skew is biased.
On a different topic, I do think the Academy needs to stop nominating so many films. It’s basically become, for best film at least, that every Oscar-esque movie made in a year gets nominated, such that it’s no longer (much of) an honor to be nominated.
