Starting in 1923, the Scholastic Awards are one of the most prestigious recognitions of teen artwork and writing, with previous winners including Sylvia Plath and Andy Warhol. And as deserving additions to this outstanding list of winners, several Latin students have joined the ranks.
Latin students have received this award in the past for writing, including Rachel Stone ’13, Annie McDonough ’14, and Hedy Gutfreund ’14, but this year, an impressive five students were recognized for their art, in fields varying from printmaking to photography. Zarrin Karimi ’15 was awarded honorable mentions in both drawing and printmaking, Cameron LeCoque ’14 received a silver key in photography, AJ Marcus ’15 won three honorable mentions in digital art, Wade Pryor ’16 received four honorable mentions in photography, and Sarah Stone ’16 was awarded an honorable mention, a silver key, and a gold key in photography. And although the full list of writing awards from the Chicago area hasn’t yet been publicly released, Frani O’Toole ’15 received a gold key in the short story category.
Over 3,100 art entries and 1,500 writing entries were submitted in this year alone, so it’s particularly amazing that so many Latin students won awards. Make sure to say congratulations if you see any of the winners in the hall; receiving a Scholastic Award is an incredible achievement. Included are some of the student works that were recognized.
