Latin Girls Hockey: A Quick Ascent

Will Nuelle The Latin Girls Hockey team is number one in the state for the first time in their 10-year history. Yes, that’s right… First in the State. Not many students knew much about the girls’ hockey team beyond the small chatter about their games from the players themselves. With a big win against Illinois powerhouse Loyola and a 5-5 tie against the 2011 League Champions New Trier, they are looking to make a statement this season. With a record of 8-3-1, the Latin Girls’ hockey team sits atop the Metro Girls division. Their record last year was 12-14-2. What changed so dramatically? After an intense recruiting effort, several talented girls were brought into the program such as Whitney Young players Annie Roche and Morgan Turner, and Latin Girls playing for the team including junior Danielle Gray, sophomore Margot Werner, sophomore Jessie Lucas, sophomore Morgan Sulger, sophomore Grace Cummins, sophomore Abigail Nadler, freshman Julia Nadler, and freshman Natalie Pontikes. Their hard work and love for the game have pushed them to the top of their division through the beginning of their 2012 season. Assistant Captain Grace Cummins added that “we have worked so hard as a team, and I’m happy our ranking in the league demonstrates that.” The team has high hopes for the rest of December and into 2013, hopefully culminating in an appearance at the AHAI State Championship game in the spring. In a recent statement, Cummins didn’t hide the team’s excitement, saying: “[we] can’t wait to see what happens in the second half of the year.” No matter the outcome, they have officially made Latin hockey history for being number one in the state of Illinois.]]>
