The new science fiction film “Project Hail Mary,” starring Ryan Gosling, premiered in theaters on March 20. Based on the book of the same name, the film follows Ryland Grace, who awakens from a coma inside a spaceship with no recollection of his past. Grace soon realizes that the two other astronauts with him on the trip have died, leaving him stranded light years away from Earth on a journey to a faraway star.
As the story progresses, Grace gradually remembers his former life as a middle school science teacher before he was sent into space to study an alien microbe known as astrophage. This parasite feeds off the energy from stars and has been slowly reducing the sun’s energy output, threatening life on earth. During his mission, Grace meets an extraterrestrial creature named Rocky who becomes Grace’s companion for the rest of the movie.
Overall, “Project Hail Mary” is a thrilling science fiction film that has caught the attention of many space lovers, resulting in a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $420 million worldwide.
Lead actor Ryan Gosling, in particular, has received significant praise, including at Latin.

“There was a good balance between the way the movie conveyed emotion and astronomy,” sophomore Kaya Ercel said. Grace’s complex character, with a mix of comedy and emotion, made the viewer genuinely interested in following along with his journey. “I don't know who else would have played the role better.”
In addition to Ryan Gosling's outstanding performance, the film’s cinematography felt exceptionally realistic and vivid, given that the movie was shot without a green screen. In one shot, a bright green, chaotic atmosphere of a massive planet in the distance epitomized this excellence.
While some viewers noted differences from the “Project Hail Mary” book, written by Andy Weir, many agreed that the adaptation is a stunning film.
Moreover, the intense scenes in which Grace voyages through another solar system make the film fly by faster than expected. “The movie was almost three hours, but it didn't feel that long,” freshman Kai Hosler said.
The film maintained viewers’ interest in part by featuring many fast-paced scenes that kept them on the edge of their seats. Upper School computer science teacher Bobby Oommen said, “I went into the movie not knowing what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by the action it had.”
In addition to the action, “Project Hail Mary” delivered emotional depth.
“I was surprised by how many emotions the movie evoked, whether it was excitement that [Grace] was able to accomplish the mission, or the sadness when I thought Rocky was going to die,” Mr. Oommen said.
Like many viewers, Mr. Oommen appreciated the evolution of Rocky and Grace’s friendship. “My favorite part was the relationship between Grace and Rocky,” he said. In the film’s bittersweet ending, Grace chooses not to return to Earth and instead lives with his newfound friend Rocky on Rocky’s faraway home planet.

The movie’s growing popularity on social media appeals to a diverse range of viewers’ interests, from film to astronomy. Whether it's Ryan Gosling’s Hail Mary of a stunning performance or the film's deep dive into space exploration and emotional storytelling, “Project Hail Mary” has left a lasting impression on the film industry and moviegoers.
