Despite competing as a 2A school in a 3A division, the boys varsity cross country team held their own at Friday’s meet at Loyola Academy, with two runners placing in the top 10 against stronger and larger teams.
Unlike usual meets, Friday’s three-mile race took place around 8:30 p.m, which is why the meet is dubbed “Flight Night.” The course was illuminated only by football field flood lights, and music played throughout the event. Even before the starting gun was fired, racers were letting off energy in pre-race mosh pits.
Sophomore Nico Rastatter finished in sixth place with a time of 15:31, and freshman Gavin Moffat finished seventh with a time of 15:34. The team as a whole recorded competitive times, showing that a smaller school can compete at a high level.
“My favorite part of the race was the pre-race mosh pit to [Travis Scott’s] FE!N,” Gavin said. “It got everyone very hype.”
Senior captain Sebastian Lee-Yee said, “The DJ was playing a bunch of great songs, and it made the race really special. No other cross country meet feels like Flight Night.”
