The girls volleyball team held its annual Pink-Out game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this past Tuesday.
Since 2022, Latin has organized similar volleyball games to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer, donating money to foundations like Dig Pink, which partners with volleyball teams nationwide to support metastatic breast cancer research. Students, faculty, and families pack the stands in their favorite pink attire to cheer on the players, whose pink jerseys pay tribute to the color of the breast cancer awareness ribbon.
Captain Avery Hellweg explained that these games are more than just wearing pink and playing good volleyball. “It’s also a way for us to play for people that we know or people in our lives who were affected by breast cancer,” she said.
Latin defeated North Shore Country Day 2-0 with a nail-biting second set that ended at 26-24 after Latin had trailed by a few points. No matter the outcome, the game stood for a larger purpose and ultimately raised several hundred dollars in donations from a raffle.
Avery said, “We have always wanted to play our best during this game.”
