Latin athletes in the Girls Chicago Central Hockey Club held their first-ever Homecoming game on Sep. 28 at Fifth Third Arena.
Since a volunteer board of directors runs the program independently of Latin, the Athletics Department has historically omitted its games from the school’s annual Homecoming schedule despite several Latin students playing for the team. Co-Curricular Chair Carla Di Silvestro said, “[Student Government] independently chose to promote hockey because we felt that a lot of the club teams don’t get enough recognition.”
The team faced off against the Naper Valley Warriors, with junior Mickey O’Malley scoring both goals in a narrow 3-2 loss.
Senior and captain Charlie Wolin said, “Obviously, the outcome isn’t what we wanted from the game, but I felt like our play outside of the scoreboard was pretty even.”
Outside of the rink, Latin’s players on Chicago Central were glad to be included in the school’s Homecoming festivities. Charlie said, “To finally get some acknowledgement and get some support from the people that we’re representing is really nice.”
