The tent on Fifth Avenue is up, the red carpet is rolled out, the honorary holiday has arrived—it’s Met Gala time. This year’s theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” recognizing Black men’s fashion, which has been used to express identity and culture through fashion in history. Nonetheless, some looks, more than others, particularly stood out to me, which I will be breaking down from the night.
Gigi Hadid
Without context, I was a little confused when I first saw this outfit. I thought she looked beautiful in Miu Miu, but it did not feel very theme-fitting. After reading more about it, I saw that her outfit was a tribute to Josephine Baker, the first Black woman to star in a motion picture and a glamour icon. Gigi wore a dress very similar to one Josephine had worn before. I love this look, and the history behind it made me love it even more. Specifically, I loved the crystal gold charms hanging on the dress that looked like raindrops and the beautiful neckline of the dress that looked like thin halter straps.
Lewis Hamilton
As expected of the event co-chair, Lewis’s outfit did not disappoint. I loved the white suit with the matching hat. The detail that really caught my eye was the beaded and decorated column on the side of the pants and hanging from his jacket. I thought this added to the outfit by keeping it simple yet intricate when zooming in on the details. This has to be one of my favorite male looks of the night due to the beautiful details and the overall look.
Doechii
When Doechii has an opportunity to dress up, you know it’s going to be good, especially when it’s with Louis Vuitton. The matching burgundy loafers, socks, and bow tie are my favorite parts. Her makeup looked flawless, as always, and I really loved how well she matched the theme. Her outfit was inspired by Black Dandyism, which was a crucial aspect of the theme, while also taking her own twist on the tailoring piece of the dress code. Doechii has her own style that is so unique and always styled well; she brought that to the carpet, while also fitting the theme so well. This was Doechii’s first Met Gala, and certainly not her last.
Demi Moore
To be honest, I wasn’t feeling this look at first glance. I was perplexed by the seemingly huge circle surrounding her and the train of the dress. However, I read online that her intention for this look was for the dress to look like a necktie—which is brilliant. As a significant aspect of the theme is tailored/suits, Demi’s take on this by dressing up as a necktie was clever and unique. After knowing what the outfit resembles, I am obsessed.
Janelle Monáe
There is always that one person at the Met Gala in a look that could stop traffic. Janelle Monáe’s look stood out the most this year. Janelle had the most fun outfit of the night, from the boxy silhouette to the monocle. It was the outfit that you look for at an event like this. Her outfit felt much like a piece of artwork rather than clothing. I was amazed by the boxy suit, prior to the regular suit reveal, I loved how it looked like a cartoon, and how the suit is drawn in 2D but then the hat is in 3D, which also has the details that are very cartoon/art-like that bring this look to life.
Khaby Lame
This outfit took me by surprise when I realized TikTok star Khaby Lame was the one rocking the suit. The clocks dangling from his flavor and the minimalist fedora were fantastic. The extra details encapsulated the theme perfectly. The addition of the pocket watches equally matched the theme well and made the look timeless and classy.
Lupita Nyong'o
This outfit is just pure perfection. Lupita’s look was one of the first outfits to really catch my eye on the screen. The baby blue shade of the suit is everything. The buttons on the jacket add so much to this look and everything down to the nail color that matches the entire look is perfect. The hat and the cape really tie this look together—I could not have pictured a better outfit for her. It also captured the idea of dandyism with the matching head-to-toe suit in this shade of blue.
Damson Idris
I was a little skeptical of this look because I felt like the race car look was confusing until I saw two people grab onto the sleeves of his jumpsuit, ready to reveal his actual look for the night. The red suit was so chic and simple, yet everything I imagined when I think of this theme. The flare suit pants with the white collar under the shirt were such a great combination, and the whole performance with the suit reveal was executed so well.
Laura Harrier
She looks incredible. Her poses on the red carpet are perfect—they highlight her look perfectly. Her jacket is beautiful, and the puffy, sheer sleeves are gorgeous. I love the contrast between the tight jacket, with oversized sleeves, and silk pants.
Laura's pose “drew inspiration from family photographs of her father and grandfather in their Sunday finery, according to a press release,” wrote Jake Henry Smith from Glamour Magazine.
I love how she tied a piece of her family history into her look, and how much the internet has swooned over it, from the pose alone. The more I read into this look, the more I love this outfit. This look was also very theme fitting due to the trousers and blazer, which were inspired by the essentials of men's tailoring style.
Zendaya
Saving the best for last, I expect nothing less from the queen of the Met herself. Every year Zendaya's looks are one of my very favorites, from Cinderella in 2019, to a classy suit in 2025, she can do no wrong. The monochromatic white blazer with the sun hat to top it off was perfect and she looks incredible, as always. This look just felt very simple and timeless, yet very fitting due to the stunning suit.
I personally loved the Met Gala this year. I was very impressed by how well the guests stuck to the theme and took their own unique twist. I can’t wait to see what next year's carpet brings!
