People across America woke up to the news on Wednesday that Donald J. Trump beat Kamala Harris in the Presidential election this week. Among these people were many Latin students. Whether they felt happy or sad, scared or excited, students received a message of support and compassion from Latin’s faculty.
During gathering, Upper School English teacher and DEI Curriculum Coordinator Brandon Woods made an announcement declaring staff’s availability in room 423 to speak about any thoughts regarding the election. Alongside him was Upper School history teacher Matt June, who emphasized how important it is to have empathetic conversations with one another.
Echoing that sentiment, Mr. Woods said, “Elections are important in terms of governance and the direction of the nation. They help to define what the country is and give people the opportunity to express their values.” He added, “We as an institution understand that elections have consequences and that those consequences impact people differently, so people need time and space to process the impact and consequences of that election.”
Students from various grades came into room 423 to talk with available faculty. Many of those who did not were still provided a chance to share their opinions in classes throughout the day.
Senior Melissa Butler said, “I really appreciate the teachers that allowed space to talk about [the election] in class. Sometimes politics can get very dicey and students can feel uncomfortable, but these discussions are what helped me the most, and I think a lot of students would be surprised if they let go of their fear of being judged.”
