On Tuesday morning, Bridget Hennessy, 9th and 10th Grade Dean, emailed the student body requesting that no one remove student government campaign posters without permission from the administration. Ms. Hennessy wrote, “As this week’s campaigning continues, let’s keep the vibes positive and put kindness and care at the forefront of our interactions!” She asked that if anyone should have concerns about the placement of a poster, they ask a trusted faculty member for guidance.
It is Student Government Election Week at Latin, and 19 students are seeking office. Running for the coveted Senior Prefect position are juniors Michael Gray and Asher Schenk, and running for Junior Prefect are sophomores Kiyan Alsikafi, Ariel Goodman, Aidyn Jones, Darina Koedjikova, Raluchi Nzelibe, and Jack Ramsey. Juniors Lucy Baer and Sammy Rubinov are going head-to-head for Communications Chair, and juniors Arin Awalegaonkar, Mel Butler, and Olivia Harris, along with sophomores Justin Canelo and Vivian Lee-Yee, are competing for the Social Chair position. Finally, juniors Ellie Anderson and Juliette Katz, and sophomores Connor Kernan and Josh Solovy, are campaigning for Co-Curricular Chair.
Speeches and voting are scheduled for community time this Friday, and the above students have adorned the walls of the Upper School with posters, which typically sport their names, their prospective positions, and slogans highlighting their goals for difference within the Latin community.
While candidates aim to generate excitement and publicity for their campaigns ahead of the upcoming election, campaign posters have been poached from the walls of the school. The motivations for these heists are unknown.
Lucy Baer said, “I’m really not sure why people would be taking down posters because really only custodians have been given clearance to do so, but I don’t think it’s going to be hurting anyone’s chances either.”
Junior Prefect candidate Jack Ramsey said, “Be respectful and kind to others!”
