This week, meet junior Alex Stamos, a sailing captain and student government leader, who never skips a Beatles song.
Alex Stamos (AS)
Anderson Miller (AM)
What’s your favorite thing to do outside of school?
I really like to sail. It’s fun, and it’s an exciting sport to me.
How did you get into sailing, and what do you enjoy most about it?
When I was 5, there was this family that used to go to Latin named the von Peterffy family, and they were really big on sailing. One day, they told me that they wanted everyone to start sailing. Jordan Abell, Robert Danciu and I started sailing, and I really liked it. I wasn’t very good at it, but I really liked it. And in Middle School, I learned that there was a high school sailing team, and I planned on joining. Now I’m a varsity captain.
What made you want to get involved in student government?
I really like that feeling of interpersonal connection at Latin. I think Latin is an ideal place for those sorts of connections to form, with very small grades and classes. I used to pass people in the hallways and try to brighten their day, but now I can actually do things that will have an impact on their day.
What’s the most rewarding part of being Communications Prefect?
I think the most rewarding part is just making people feel good, and I really just want to make everyone as happy as possible.
What’s a memory you wish you could hold onto forever?
When I was 5, I went to Greece with my grandfather, who I was supposed to be named after, and my dad, so it was sort of triple lineage. We went to [my grandfather’s] old house, where he used to live, and it was this pretty rundown place. He didn’t have a bathroom, plumbing, air conditioning, or anything modern. He had an outhouse, actually. And it just made me feel so grateful to think about what my grandfather sacrificed, what my father sacrificed, to provide for me. My grandfather fled because he was escaping the Greek Civil War, but to see him come back and prosper felt inspiring.
Who has shaped you the most, and why?
It’s hard not to say my parents, but a big influence in my life was probably my nanny, Reyna, who has been working with my family since I was really little. She is from Guatemala, and when I was 6, she taught me how to clean up after myself, be a nice person, and even a few pieces of Spanish. And she’s just a really kind person who impacts everyone that she sees.
What’s your favorite Latin tradition?
I really like the student-faculty basketball game. Or the big games against Parker. But if the games aren’t hype, they can be awful. In my freshman year, they were terrible. Nothing was going on. I didn’t feel the school spirit. But this year, I feel like it was better, with the planning, and I announced the roster, and we turned the lights off and showed some of the highlights.
What’s your favorite lunch served in the cafeteria?
Okay, let me put you on. You use a pretzel roll if they have it. You go roll, ham, Swiss cheese, double toasted, mayonnaise, seasoning, and olive oil. And it’s so fire.
If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?
I would really like a little pink axolotl!
What’s something about you that people would find unexpected?
I feel like I’m kind of an open book, to be honest. But something that people would find unexpected is that I’m a really big fan of the Beatles. Like, if you play the first five seconds of any Beatles song, I can name it.
