With the school year coming to a close, the season of Latin students' favorite music festival, Lollapalooza, is almost here, and it’s time to discuss the lineup, prices, expectations, and more.
Lineup
One thing that Lollapalooza always gets right is a lineup that contains a blend of multiple different genres and unique artists.
For hip-hop, Lollapalooza is bringing awesome performers and big names such as Tyler, The Creator, ASAP Rocky, and Doechii. Also, the EDM scene is getting a ton of love, with sets from Dom Dolla, Martin Garrix, Rufus de Sol, and so much more.
Additionally, some of the world’s biggest young pop stars are coming to Chicago: Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, and Gracie Abrams. There are also big indie artists, rock artists, K-pop artists, and more. Although I may not be thrilled about this lineup, as there are not many of my personal favorite artists performing, it undoubtedly brings star power and a little something for every type of music listener.
Scheduling
The Lollapalooza scheduling always leaves fans conflicted—having to decide between artists is no easy feat. Last year, I had to make the difficult decision of seeing SZA or Zedd (I chose SZA, and I did NOT regret it). This year, the decisions are even tougher; Tyler, the Creator and Dom Dolla at the same time on Thursday, and ASAP Rocky and Sabrina Carpenter at the same time on Sunday.
Junior Ellie Szczerba is one of many fans forced to make sacrifices because of the difficult schedule. “I love the headliners this year, but I really wish that Sabrina Carpenter and ASAP Rocky were on different days,” she said.
Prices/Overcrowding
Lollapalooza was dangerously crowded last year. I remember Chappell Roan’s performance on day one, which was so tightly packed that I felt like a grain of sand on the beach. Not to mention Future and Metro Boomin’s set on day three, which was a disaster, as the crowd was continuously reminded to take five steps back. “The crowd was really scary,” said junior Nate Axelrod. “I literally could not move when Future was performing.”
To combat overcrowding, it seems like Lollapalooza ticket prices have surged. “Pricing is really high this year,” said junior Thomas McLaughlin. “It keeps getting higher every year, and it’s really annoying.”
This approach, while some may rightfully be upset about it, is a smart way to reduce the crowds. While I am not convinced the price increase will make a massive difference in the overpopulated crowds, seeing slightly smaller crowds will still be a breath of fresh air.
Expectations
With worldwide superstars, a diverse lineup, and (hopefully) smaller crowds, I expect an awesome four days of fun, bonding, and most importantly, music. The lineup has something for everyone, and I know I will certainly have fun. Will it be better than next year? There is only one way to find out.
