A new take on a decade-old challenge for charity, akin to the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014 to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), the #SpeakYourMIND Challenge is gaining momentum across the Latin community and beyond.
As the brainchild of the University of South Carolina’s (USC) Mental Illness Needs Discussion (MIND) club, the challenge has already garnered hundreds of thousands of views and generated over $40,000 in donations since March 31.
Videos of high schoolers doused in buckets of ice water while challenging their peers to do the same flood Instagram and TikTok in hopes of raising awareness, and financial support, for Active Minds, a non-profit organization encouraging youth and young adults to shed light on mental health challenges and advocate for positive change.
While Latin students appear to be well aware of the new challenge that has taken over their social media, they may not be entirely aware of its intended purpose.
“I did the USC MIND challenge because it was a really current trendy thing, and I kind of wanted to not be left out of the trend,” sophomore Myles Antelis said.
While the challenge continues to gain traction, advocates emphasize the mission of destigmatizing mental health challenges as a key motivator.
