You’re sitting in your math class, falling asleep as you listen to your teacher ramble about limits and derivatives, when all of a sudden you hear harmonizing voices gathering around you: “There’s no way to hide since you pushed my love aside.” This Valogram is the wake-up call that you most definitely needed to spice up your morning.

Valograms are one of the most beloved Latin traditions, where students send serenades to a special person during the school day in support of the Best Buddies organization. The tradition brings love in the air, for both the people serenaded as well as for the cause.

Leading up to Valentine’s Day, Best Buddies members sell as many Valograms as they can. All proceeds go to support the Best Buddies organization.

This year, serenaders sang “Hopelessly Devoted to You” by John Farrar and “Love is an Open Door,” written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and famously featured in the movies “Grease” and “Frozen.”

The singers receive special permission to leave class, and it is the one time students are encouraged to interrupt academic times on purpose.

Senior Lucy Baer, who participates in the singing, said, “I like how it brings the two a cappella groups that we have together, like we don't just sing with the Romanettes and the Latones don't just sing with the Latones, which brings a more dynamic voice.”

Senior Finn Deeney has been singing Valograms since his freshman year.

He said, “Getting out there and singing to someone in their class is such a vulnerable thing, but it shows the community that we have.”
