Doechii, the self-proclaimed “Swamp Princess,” is redefining hip-hop with her intriguing sound, unapologetic confidence, and infectious energy. At just 26 years old, Doechii has emerged at the forefront of the music industry, gaining momentum with each song release. This weekend, Doechii secured the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, the third woman to do so after rappers Lauryn Hill and Cardi B.

Doechii's voice instantly shines, setting her apart in the ever-evolving music industry. Her dynamic delivery, versatility, and fearless approach to music make her a standout artist. She blends rap, R&B, and experimental hip-hop, effortlessly switching between genres with smooth, hypnotic vocals. Drawing influences from Missy Elliott and Nicki Minaj, Doechii brings a futuristic edge to the upcoming music industry, incorporating punk, hyper-pop, and electronic beats elements in her music.

Sophomore Sofy Munive said, “I first came across Doechii on Spotify Shuffle, and I instantly loved her music, which led me to explore her entire discography.”

Doechii entered the music industry in 2020 when she independently released “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” causing her to go viral on TikTok. The song explores Doechii’s identity with creative and critical lyrics, delivered with a hysterical sense of self-awareness. Later, in 2023, Doechii released another viral TikTok song, “What It Is,” adding a new perspective to her musical journey as she embraced a smooth R&B groove. The accompanying TikTok dance quickly went viral thanks to its beginner-friendly moves, further catapulting Doechii into the spotlight.

One of the major moments that pushed Doechii into the mainstream was her feature on Tyler, the Creator's 2024 album “CHROMAKOPIA.” Her collaboration on the track “Balloon” introduced her to a wider audience and showcased her ability to blend her unique style with other influential artists. This high-profile feature played a significant role in her rising recognition and helped reinforce her status as one of the most dynamic and genre-defying artists of the 2020s, standing alongside some of the era's most influential voices in the music industry.

Many fans discovered Doechii through her features on various artists’ albums and exposure on social media, leading them to explore her discography and uncover “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” released on August 30 of last year. With its clever, layered lyrics, hidden messages, and exceptional production quality, it cemented her status as a rising star, earning her three 2025 Grammy nominations: Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance for “NISSAN ALTIMA,” and Best Rap Album, which she won.

Doechii is also known for her stage presence, as seen on “The Late Show” with Stephen Colbert where her live performances of “DENIAL IS A RIVER” and “BOILED PEANUTS” left fans in awe of her musical brilliance.

Superfan and sophomore Bea Bloomer said, “It [was] my favorite performance because of its creativity and uniqueness, and I love how it is campy. It definitely sticks out the most in my mind for the level of production, its choreography, the fashion featured, and the face tape.”

However, Doechii’s style of music isn’t for everyone. Her unique sound and experimental approach to music can be an instant turn-off among music listeners.

Sophomore Lilah Small said, “I don’t like her. Her sound and genre are weird, and it’s just not something I enjoy listening to.”

Yet for many, that same boldness is exactly what makes Doechii stand out as she shows no signs of slowing down in 2025. With her popular music videos, fearless attitude, and loyal fanbase, the “Swamp Princess” is more confident than ever in challenging the traditional sound of rap and redefining the genre.

“Doechii is truly creating her own lane in the music industry,” Sofy said. “Her impact feels both groundbreaking and undeniable.”
