This week, meet junior, actor, and costume enthusiast Izzy Schafer.

Scarlet Gitelson (SG): What is the activity you spend the most time on?

Izzy Schafer (IS): Theater. No question. I do an insane amount of theater through school, Lookingglass Theatre Company, and theaters around the city. It is literally my entire life, and I love it.

SG: What’s your favorite production you’ve ever been in?

IS: I’d say my two favorites, probably. I really loved doing “Antigone” last year. That was really fun. And I also did a show called “Our Dear Dead Drug Lord” last January with one of my best friends, Lauren, and that was really fun.

SG: What do you like about theater?

IS: A big part of it is the community. You get groups of the most incredible people just working together to create art, which is just the most lovely thing. I also love being able to just put my emotions into something, to express myself through theater where I’m trying someone that’s not myself. And it’s a really great way for me to combat my anxiety by performing as someone who isn’t me.

SG: What is one hobby of yours that people wouldn’t expect?

IS: I really love historical costume design. That’s something I’m very into, specifically the 19th century. But I really love drawing and learning about designing. I’m starting to sew some stuff, because I just think it’s just something that’s really interesting, and I’m actually planning on doing an ISP about it.

SG: What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned in the past week?

IS: There’s been a lot of reviewing right now because of finals coming up. I don’t know that it’s necessarily something I learned, but my favorite thing I’ve done in a class is, in my Spanish class today, we read this really beautiful passage—I think it’s called “La Rosa Blanca”—and it was just a really pretty story. It was part of an exam, but I just liked reading the story because it was pretty. It was about this rose who had never seen itself and thought it was so much uglier than it was because everything around it was so beautiful. But then one day it looked in the mirror and realized how beautiful it was.

SG: What would you say is your favorite item to get from the kiosk?

IS: I like the banana chocolate chip muffins. Those are good.
