Junior Jack Zeiger wrapped up his golf season with a 13th-place finish in the State tournament on October 19 and 20, capping off a very successful season for the varsity boys golf captain, with many tournament wins and a scoring average under par.
At State, Jack shot nine over par and was named an All-State player. Jack found similar success at regionals by breaking the Latin course record by one stroke with a score of 68. Reflecting on his season, Jack said, “I felt really proud and happy.”
Freshman and varsity golfer John Rose said, “It was amazing to see him play.” Jack started the season strong with a win in the Payton-Jones Invitational in early August, and he went on to win the ISL tournament at Harbourside. Jack was also named ISL golfer of the year, one of his season goals.
Boys varsity golf coach James Huffman said, “With most golfers at this level, having a consistent score every match is not very common, but myself and the team could always count on him to shoot a solid round.”
Jack went undefeated in head-to-head matches this season, but his impact on the team was more than just his consistency. John said, “Everyone on the team loves having him as a competitor, leader, and friend.”
Coach Huffman spoke to Jack’s abilities as captain of the team. “He fits the role of captain well,” Huffman said. “He never skipped practice, always brought an amazing attitude to the team, and with such a large team this year, he always helped keep everyone on task.”
Being a part of the varsity golf team means more to Jack than just playing golf. Jack competes individually in the summer as well, and although he enjoys the summer season, he finds high school golf more fun. His favorite aspect of the high school season is “the camaraderie with my teammates,” something Jack often misses in the individual sport.
Jack still has one more school season ahead of him, and he has no intent to slow down. Jack said, “My goals for next season are to lead the team to State, win regionals, sectionals, and State, and average under par again. I’m super excited for next year and to try and play some great golf and have a lot of fun.”
